Broadscape

2016. King’s House, Brighton

Broadscape was part of the collective exhibition at the Brighton Photo Fringe photography festival in 2016.

Broadscape brought together four artists—Clare Hankinson, Claire Kennard, Willie Robb, and Heidi Kuisma—whose practices share an interest in the spaces that surround us. Alongside the photographs, the exhibition also featured reflections by writer Iris Veysey inspired by the works on display.

The photographs directed our gaze toward unfamiliar and hidden environments. Through photographic processes and modes of presentation, the exhibition invited audiences to consider how photography can deepen and clarify our relationship with the environments we inhabit.

My photographs focus on branches and leaves. By reducing the background to a soft, surrounding blur of light, these delicate images remove flora and fauna from their original context. The digital photographs were taken using the original Lensbaby lens and were initially created in response to Found Songs, an album by the Icelandic neo-classical composer Ólafur Arnalds.

Broadscape toi yhteen neljä taiteilijaa (Clare Hankinson, Claire Kennard, Willie Robb ja Heidi Kuisma), jotka kaikki ovat kiinnostuneita ympärillämme olevista tiloista. Valokuvien ohella esillä oli myös kirjailija Iris Veyseyn ajatuksia valokuvista.

Valokuvat veivät katseemme tuntemattomiin ja piilotettuihin ympäristöihin. Näyttely kutsui yleisöä pohtimaan, miten valokuvaus prosessi- ja esitysmuotojen avulla selkeyttää yhteyttämme ympäristöömme.

Valokuvani tarkentuvat oksiin ja lehtiin. Kun tausta pienennetään ympäröivään sumeaan valoon, herkät kuvat poistavat kasviston ja eläimistön asiayhteydestään. Alkuperäisellä Lensbaby-objektiivilla otetut digitaalikuvat otettiin alunperin vastauksena Islannin uusklassisen säveltäjän Ólafur Arnaldsin albumiin, Found Songs.
