We sink ships

We Sink Ships (WSS) was a collaborative project between artist Heidi Kuisma and Scottish musician and photographer Neil Milton, active between 2008 and 2010. Working across photography, music, film, and digital media, we created exhibitions, live events, and a weekly radio programme that brought together artists, musicians, and independent creative communities.

During the project we curated and presented a series of online photography exhibitions, exploring the possibilities of exhibiting work beyond the traditional gallery space. More information about these exhibitions can be found here.

We Sink Ships Radio

WSS Radio was a weekly podcast broadcast on the Scottish online radio station Radio Magnetic.

Each episode embraced an eclectic mix of music, ranging from indie and ambient to contemporary classical, disco, post-rock, and experimental punk. Regular guest curators assembled their own playlists, ensuring that every programme offered a different listening experience.

Beyond music, the podcast celebrated independent creativity by featuring conversations with record label founders, filmmakers, gallery owners, promoters, and artists about their work and the ideas that inspired them.

Guests included Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Robert Raths (Erased Tapes), worriedaboutsatan, Sami Sänpäkkilä, Clem Leek, Matt Mignanelli, Jan Anderzén, Fielding Hope, Codes in the Clouds, and Sarah Brugner (They Shoot Music Don't They).

We Sink Ships: Elements

We Sink Ships: Elements is a short film premiered at the Edinburgh Art Festival in 2010.

Structured around the five classical elements—Water, Fire, Earth, Air, and Aether—the work brings together sixty photographs, five original musical compositions, five poems, and archival footage to create a poetic audiovisual journey through landscape, memory, and the natural world.

WSS Radio oli viikottainen podcast, joka lähetettiin skotlantilaisen Radio Magnetic -verkkoradioaseman kautta.

Podcastissa soitetut kappaleet vaihtelivat indie-suosikkeista ambient-klassiseen musiikkiin ja kimaltevista discokappaleista meluisaan punkiin. Kutsuimme säännöllisesti vieraita kokoamaan oman soittolistan, joten koskaan ei tiennyt varmuudella mitä musiikkia podcastissa tulisi kuulemaan.

Musiikin lisäksi tahdoimme tuoda esiin asioita, joista pidimme, joten kutsuimme podcastiin vieraiksi levy-yhtiöiden omistajia, ohjaajia, gallerioiden omistajia, promoottoreita ja taiteilijoita.

We Sink Ships: Elements on lyhytelokuva, joka esitettiin Edinburghin taidefestivaaleilla 2010.

Työ jakautuu viiteen teemaan: vesi, tuli, maa, ilma ja eetteri. Se koostuu 60 valokuvasta, viidestä sävellyksestä, viidestä runosta sekä arkistomateriaalista.
